How do we use our soils and care for them?

The latest Soil Selfies are from the Wimmera -Mallee: sandy dune used for recreation and nature at Pine Plains, and black clays used for food production near Jeparit.

From the threat of soil erosion at the Warracknabeal Rifle Butt to the active sandy lunette dune at Pine Plains moving over nearby trees, both need protection from 4WD damage. From these threats of erosion on these hilly landforms, at Jeparit the threat to loss of soil on flat land is instead by its caving in to sinkholes.

From the Wimmera Mallee, the latest Soil Selfies posted is Solid Clay for building Rifle Butt . It shows the stability of a clay mound created decades ago for recreational rifle shooting club. Despite its steep slope, the only threat to the soil’s stability today has been the advent of illegal 4wd vehicle(s) using the mound for their recreation.
